DEBORAH GOURLAY
I was born in Argentina and now live and work near Farnham in Surrey.
Much of my childhood was spent in Latin America and the colourful textiles and architecture, particularly Guatemala provided me with my early inspiration. My interest in architecture has continued over the years and I became increasingly drawn to derelict spaces, in particular interiors. I love the atmosphere, the imprints of past histories, and the mystery that the spaces exude. I see these silent interiors as a space to daydream. I work spontaneously and intuitively combining and layering various media such as print, drawing, photography and painting. My drawings and paintings explore the drama and atmosphere of the interiors whilst the photography suggests a more ephemeral and transitory aspect of these spaces. My photography is developed through a series of transformations involving drawing, print, glass, and sometimes by the creation of small models. The images are continually moved through real and illusory space. I have also produced a series of Liquid Light photography which allows for a more 'hands-on' painterly approach.
In 2010 I completed a degree in Fine Art at the University of Creative Arts in Farnham. During this time I was granted priviledged access to create work at The Grange. The house is a semi-derelict mansion whilst the theatre stages an annual opera festival during the summer months. I spent many hours drawing and absorbing the spirit of the house, often perched high in the rafters, sometimes alone and other times as the house came alive to the sound of rehearsal.
In 2010-11 I became Artist in Residence at the Watt's gallery in Compton. I spent the year leading workshops with young offenders, prisoners and the homeless. My artwork which was mainly inspired by the wonderful Watt's chapel culminated in a one-man show in the main gallery.
I am currently producing work for Glyndebourne. I feel very honoured to be invited and it's been a joy to immerse myself within Glyndebourne's vibrant and intensely creative atmosphere. My work which is inspired by their 2015 operas will be on display at Glyndebourne's theatre during the summer.
I have several awards such as from the Royal Institute of Watercolour, Pallant House, and several prizes from the Fine Arts Society. I have exhibited in various regional and London galleries.
